Wedding Photography Assistants’ Duties and Responsibilities

The role of the assistant is a very important and can help make the wedding day an enjoyable and successful experience for the client and photographer.  The assistant is hired to aide both the photographers and the clients.

  1. Arrive ready, prepared, and on-time.
  2. Review the equipment that is packed for the shoot.
  3. Review the itinerary for the day.
  4. Be agreeable, congenial, and respectful .
  5. Turn your phone OFF……….No Texting, you should be thinking about the shoot and not personal communications.
  6. Be attentive to the needs of the wedding principles and help as you can.
  7. Become familiar with cameras and lenses to be used, We do not want to hear that “I shoot Nikon.”
  8. Set up studio lights and arrange cords for safety.
  9. Make sure candles are lit for group shots.
  10. You are responsible for the dress in every shot.
  11. Be ready to help with the children in the group shots.
  12. Never sit down, especially during the main events (ie group shots, portraits, reception events)
  13. Take care of your own personal needs, (ie eat a hearty breakfast and bring snacks if necessary) There may or may not be a chance to stop and eat.  This is simply the nature of the job.
  14. Be alert and quick on your feet.  If you know what is coming next, prepare for it.
  15. After the wedding, we will be leaving the church, so gather the tools and get ready to move.
  16. It is the assistants’ responsibility to get all the gear back into the car.
  17. Be aware of the schedule and the progress of the shoot, know what time it is.
  18. Be fully involved in the process and the progress, be creative and be ready to offer creative solutions if asked.
  19. Understand that finally, it is the photographers’ responsibility for making the client happy.
  20. Prove that you are an asset to the team and you will be compensated.
